Owner & Gun Drilling Machinist
Gun Drilling Started with Mom
A woman owned business since the 1980s, formerly known as Gundrilling of Wisconsin, I worked for my mom growing up. She taught me the ethics of business and life at the same time. Working for family isn’t always easy, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. She taught me how to do things the right way, do things ethically, and do right by our customers by being a consistent, available, and reliable source of high quality deep hole precision gun drilling.
My parents sold the Gun Drilling business in 1994. As a result, I had the opportunity to work in numerous machine shops around the area. I’ve maintained relationships with the machinists and owners of those businesses over the years, and many of them are my customers today. Being in other small family owned businesses in my younger years allowed me to see how other businesses operated, and how they treated their customers. That distance from our old family business also gave me the perspective to appreciate what my mom taught me.
I started Normark Manufacturing in 2011, after getting a lot of requests for my services and expertise that not many people in the area was doing. After much thought and prayer, I decided to purchase my first machine. The Pig Barn I was working in wasn’t pretty, had no heat, and my wife didn’t like how I smelled at night…but I was really proud of what I was producing, and that I was working for myself. The owner of the barn was kind enough to charge my only $100 a month in rent, which allowed me to get established. Within a year and a half I was able to move to a new facility that had heat, a bathroom, a level floor, and had me smelling like machining oil instead of well, you know.
While trying to grow my business in my new manufacturing facility, the owner of Gundrilling of Wisconsin, who had purchased the business from them back in 1994, called me and asked if I wanted to buy it back from him. Having a wife, daughter, and son it was a difficult decision that make that additional investment. I knew that with honesty, and my faith in God, that it would work out. Not only that, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to grow my business in the very same place where I developed my skills and work ethic from….the hardest working woman I knew, my mom.
